Amélioration des données sur les fréquences et magnitudes des crues en Espagne par des méthodes dendrogéomorphologiques (projets DENDRO AVENIDAS et MAS D-A)

Floods are the type of natural hazard having the highest socio-economical impact on a global and national scale, especially during sudden and torrential events that typically occur in mountainous areas.
In order to prevent these risks, flood hazard analyses have been carried out traditionally with hydrologic and hydraulic methods, and secondarily using palaeohydrological-historical and geological-geomorphological methods. Nonetheless, these techniques pose countless uncertainties with respect to the (non-) availability of data (hydrometeorological, historical and flood deposit records), their spatio-temporal validity and their statistical representativeness.
In most torrential channels, trees or tree-like vegetation is easy and frequent to find close to the channel margins. Dendrogeomorphology takes advantage of paleoflood information registered in roots, trunks and branches of trees or shrubs located in geomorphological locations, that may be useful to complete (or even to replace) the systematic registry or paleohydrologic data of torrential floods that have occurred in a certain stream.
It therefore is the general scope of this project to use data and methodologies derived from tree-ring series to improve torrential flood frequency and magnitude assessment, so that more adequate preventive measures can be implemented to mitigate associated risks. The proposed research will be tested and set up using several locations in the headwaters of the Alberche (Sierra de Gredos, Ávila), Eresma (Sierra de Guadarrama, Segovia) and Tagus rivers (Sistema Ibérico, Guadalajara) as study areas in Spain.
